MP bypolls: Nath leads rally, faces Congress ire

- RABINDRA NATH CHOUDHURY

With bypoll voting in Damoh Assembly seat in Madhya Pradesh just three days away, senior Congress MLA Laxman Singh on Wednesday took an indirect dig at MP PCC president Kamal Nath for holding a roadshow in the constituency to drum up support for the party candidate raising the prospect of spreading viral infections.

Mr Singh, brother of veteran Congress leader Digvijay Singh, said all the political programmes and religious festivals should be cancelled to contain the coronavirus pandemic in the state.

“It is neither the government nor the leaders who can tackle the pandemic. It is the people who alone can contain the pandemic. All political programmes and religious festivals should be cancelled to break the chain of the virus”, the Congress MLA tweeted.

His jibe at Mr Nath for holding a roadshow during a pandemic has brought to the fore the infighting in the party.

The ruling BJP took the opportunity to corner Mr Nath on the issue, saying that the latter did not follow corona guidelines while leading the roadshow by his party in Damoh.

“Mr Nath was seen without a mask while leading the campaign for the party in Damoh. This is a clear violation of corona guidelines,” election in-charge of BJP in the bypolls and state urban development minister Bhupendra Singh said.
