Due to professional circumstances… we will be recasting Dostana 2, says Dharma Productions

While there has been a dignified silence on the side of both producer Karan Johar and actor Kartik Aaryan, the truth is that Kartik is out of Dostana 2 a film that has been in the planning and making for over a decade. While some say that Kartik opted out of the film due to “creative differences”, there is a rumor that the differences were between him and the film’s heroine Janhvi Kapoor, with whom he had been linked by the media.

According to sources, the makers have already invested around `20 crore in the film, which is being directed by Collin D’Cunha.

Rumors have been floating since Friday morning about Kartik being out of Dostana 2. A statement from Dharma Productions late on Friday evening said they are “recasting,” but did not go into details of which character was being recast. “Due to professional circumstances… we will be recasting Dostana 2…Please wait for the official announcement soon,” read the statement.

After Dharma Productions issued this statement, Karan seems to have unfollowed Kartik on Instagram.

I n response to this statement, by Dharma Productions Kangana Ranaut blasted Kjo in a series of tweets. While extending support to Kartik and criticizing the prevalent nepotism in bollywood she wrote, “Kartik has come this far on his own, on his own he will continue to do so, only request to papa jo and his nepo gang club is please leave him alone like Shushant don’t go after him and force him to hang himself. Leave him alone you vultures, get lost chindi nepos...”(sic). In a subsequent tweet she compared Kartik’s exit from the film to the false framing of Sushant Singh Rajput in a drug nexus. “Kartik no need to be scared of these chillars .... after doing nasty articles and releasing announcements blaming only your attitude for fall out this moron wants to maintain dignified silence. They spread same stories of drug addiction and unprofessional behaviour for SSR also.” (sic). Not stopping here, the actress went on to call KJo a drama queen in a third of her series of tweets. She wrote, “Know that we are with you, the one who did not make you can’t break you either, today you must be feeling lonely and targeted from all corners. No need to feel so,every one knows this drama queen JO, you will do very well dear, trust your instincts and be disciplined. much love Red heart.” (sic).

The first part of Dostana starring John Abraham, Abhishek Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra, was a box office hit.

But the director Tarun Mansukhani could not come up with a sequel script “good enough” for Johar to greenlight.

The departure of Kartik means that the film is back to square one.

NOT A ONE-OFF

This is one of the few instances when a film which was halfway into the shoot had a change of actors. Director Vishwas Patil, who had shot Rajjo with Bengali actress Tanushree Chakraborty, decided to replace her with Kangana Ranaut, who was paid a sum of `8.5 crore towards a duplex at Bandra. Patil reshot the film with the Queen actress.
