Summers are incomplete without dramatic trends, and ruffles aka frills are usually perfect additions to create such statement looks. On social media, pretty stars like Jahnvi Kapoor, Sara Ali Khan, Shraddha Kapoor, and Ananya Panday can be seen flaunting their bubbly selves in frill frocks and summer dresses. The summer dress trend is especially popular among PYTs as it instantly catches the eye and uplifts the mood effortlessly.

After months of casual stay-at-home attire, the need for easy, stylish, single-item outfits is more essential than ever, feels designer duo Pankaj and Nidhi. “A summer dress is usually easy fitting with a lightweight fabric, easy to beat the heat and still look chic. You can pair it up with vibrant accessories or just keep it simple with minimal classic jewellery. There’s no right body type for a summer dress, it can work best for any body type and size. The length can vary from a short flowy dress to a maxi dress, as long as it’s easy to wear and breathable.”

Summers are all about playing dress-up, and one can try different silhouettes to see what works best for their style. Amrish Kumar,

MD at the label Ritu Kumar, recommends short dresses for a perfect summer day. He says, “While dresses are chic and easy to wear, fluid maxis also work beautifully for a day-in

as well as a night out when accessorized with hoops or metallic earrings. A little above the knee is a good length for a short dress made of premium quality fabrics such as cotton voile, poplin, modal, rayon moss, and chiffon.”

RUFFLE SHUFFLE:

Voluminous details on a dress with ruffles are the new way to flaunt your body, and a lot of global celebrities are endorsing this trend with quirky jackets and accessories. Fashion expert Priyanka Ahuja at Yamamay hints at taking inspiration from chic feminine vibe and mentions, “The summer dresses are playful but comfortable, and can be styled up or down with help of accessories. When paired with knee-high boots or heels, it gives an edgy high-glam look. And, when you pair them with sneakers and a cropped jacket it looks casual and fun. In my opinion frill dresses are best when they are either maxi or mini dresses. Midi frill dresses look odd and may make you look bloated if the proportions are not correct.”

On the other hand, designer Aditi Swain believes summer dresses with utilitarian details are quite popular this season. She says, “Relaxed dresses in whites and pastel shades look very stylish and contemporary. Depending on the comfort and choice, one can pair a nice crop top and skirt with a statement scarf, match bag, and sunglasses to look retro and elegant.”

KEEP IT COOL

Short summer dresses with feminine frills and floral prints are massively popular among young fashion lovers across the globe. Designer Kavita Gupta suggests that a fitted or flared summer dress works best on an hourglass-shaped body, whereas an apple shape or petite body type can opt for a shift dress to accentuate the curves.

For tall and waif-thin girls, a flowy mini dress could work wonders. She shares the current trends in the category and adds, “Apart from the staple solids like black and white, look for vintage tones in bright hues for a bright summer dress. Go for cotton and cotton-based variations or blends of georgettes and linen.”

To make the most of this summer trend, runway director Jagnoor Aneja adds an important tip and emphasizes experimenting with personal style.

“A trend has nothing to do with your body type but your confidence.

Dress to enhance your personality and keep the length according to your comfort and mood. Invest in skinfriendly fabrics like cotton, linen, and chiffons to keep it easy breezy,” he sums up.
