Sitaram Yechury’s son dies of Covid

CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury’s elder son Ashish passed away due to Covid-19 related complicati­ons on Thursday morning at a hospital in Gurugram.

Mr Yechury tweeted, “It is with great sadness that I have to inform that I lost my elder son, Ashish Yechury to Covid-19 this morning. I want to thank all those who gave us hope and who treated him doctors, nurses, frontline health workers, sanitation workers and innumerabl­e others who stood by us.” Ashish, who studied at the Asian College of Journalism, Chennai, worked in several publicatio­ns, including the Times of India in Delhi, before moving to Pune.

Journalist­s who worked with him remembered him as a mild-mannered and warm profession­al who was knowledgea­ble and well read. He would have turned 35 this year in June. People close to the family said that he was doing fine in the Gurugram hospital for the last two weeks and finally passed away at 5.30 am on Thursday.

Condolence­s poured in from all quarters. Leaders from across the country, including President Ram Nath Kovind, vice-president M. Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, conveyed their condolence­s.

Several leaders, including Bengal chief minister Mamta Banerjee, DMK supremo M.K. Stalin, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor were among the many who sent their condolence­s. Mr Yechury further tweeted, “I bid goodbye to my son, Ashish (Biku) at noon today. I thank all of you who have shared our sorrow. I thank everybody who gave us strength to be able to face this dark hour. I know that I am not alone in my grief, with this pandemic consuming countless lives.”
