THE FLOYD LESSON

- New Delhi

Remember the murder of the family man, Afrazul? The US has an affirmative action statute that predominantly deals with equal opportunities for employment and wage parity. We, on the other hand, have specific laws for crime against minorities. And yet we find that justice struggles to seep through a maze of sins of omission and commission. The case of George Floyd is thus all the more remarkable that with no special laws to cover crimes on minorities, the delivery of justice was not only expeditious but was seen to be done within a prevailing legal system. The best crafted laws may fail while a vibrant judicial system would repeatedly deliver. GOVT, TAKE CHARGE

THIS REFERS TO “Lessons not learnt after a year of battling Covid” (April 22). The uncontrolled spread of the pandemic has taken the shape of a huge threat looming over the country. We are at a critical juncture wherein the government must judiciously use its resources to distribute drugs, oxygen and vaccines while the people must act with both responsibility and caution. Let us pray that we overcome the challenge that it poses to all of us.
