EV SALES DROP 20% IN FY21

After five years of growth, electric vehicle sales dropped 20 per cent in FY21 despite an uptick in electric four-wheelers’ demand. The EV industry sold 2,36,802 units in FY21 against 2,95,683 in FY20, according to the Society of Manufactur­ers of Electric Vehicle (SMEV)

In the largest segment of two-wheelers, the industry sold 1,43,837 units, including 40,836 high-speed and 103,000 low-speed vehicles. Compared

to 1,52,000 units sold in FY20 there was a decline of 6 per cent.

In the three-wheeler segment 88,378 units were sold against 1,40,683 units in FY20–a decline of 37 per cent. Three-wheelers not registered with the transport authority are not included in this. The four-wheeler segment saw a 52 per cent growth to 4,588 units compared to 3,000 units in FY20.

“A lot more needs to be done to achieve the target under the FAME II scheme,” said Sohinder Gill, D-G, SMEV.
