MP: ‘Lack of oxygen’ kills 5 Covid patients in hospital

Five Covid-19 patients undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh died reportedly due to lack of oxygen, triggering a public outcry.

The incident took place in a private Covid hospital at Ukhari in Jabalpur city on the intervenin­g night of Thursday-Friday.

Fifty Covid-19 patients were admitted to the ICU of the hospital when the incident took place.

According to the police, some relatives of the patients admitted to the Covid hospital rushed to the medical facility after learning about the alleged disruption in oxygen supply in the ICU ward.

◗ JABALPUR DISTRICT Jabalpur district collector Karmaveer Sharma ordered a probe into the incident. He constitute­d a four-member team to probe the incident.

They staged noisy protests at the hospital when they found that five patients died due to a reported lack of oxygen.

The police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, a senior district police officer told this newspaper.

“We arranged oxygenfill­ed cylinders to supply oxygen to the patients admitted in the ICU, following instructio­ns by Jabalpur district superinten­dent of police Sidharth Bahuguna”, the police officer said.

The measure saved the lives of other patients who were put on oxygen, he added.

Meanwhile, Jabalpur district collector Karmaveer Sharma ordered a probe into the incident. He constitute­d a four-member team to probe the incident.

The five deceased Covid19 patients were Pramila Tiwari, Gautam Tiwari, Anand Sharma , Gautami Roy, and Devendra Kuraria.

The tragic incident comes close on the heels of the deaths of ten Covid-19 patients reportedly due to lack of oxygen in a government hospital in Shahdol in MP last fortnight.

Madhya Pradesh on Friday reported 13,590 fresh cases of coronaviru­s positive taking the tally of cases to 4,727,85.
