72-yr-old man strangled during burglary attempt by neighbour

A 72-year-old building contractor was allegedly strangled to death at his home in Southwest Delhi’s Sagarpur area during a burglary attempt by his neighbour, who was released from Tihar jail two months ago, the police said on Sunday.

The police said it has arrested the accused along with his associate who received the stolen articles to further sell them.

The incident took place on the intervenin­g night of Thursday and Friday when the deceased had woken up to go to the washroom, the police said.

The accused have been identified as Sunny, a resident of Main Sagarpur, and Bhanu, a resident of West Sagarpur.

On Friday, the police received informatio­n and reached at the spot where one Sunil Saigal was found in an unconsciou­s condition. He was declared dead and his body was preserved in Safdarjung Hospital, the police said.

On Saturday, the deceased’s daughter, Mukta Saigal, went to the police station and alleged that some articles, including two cheque books, one ATM card, one gold chain, and one gold ring, were missing from their house, a senior police officer said.

She suspected that someone had killed her father and stolen the things, the police said.

During investigat­ion, the police analysed the CCTV footage and arrested Sunny.

On his instance, receiver Bhanu was also arrested, the officer said. Bhanu was not involved in the killing. He received the stolen articles from Sunny to sell them, he said.

The stolen items were recovered from their possession, the police added.

THE ACCUSED along with his associate who received the stolen articles to further sell them were arrested. The incident took place on the intervenin­g night of Thursday and Friday, police said.
