BJP slams Diggy’s Art 370 remark, seeks NIA probe into his activities

- RABINDRA NATH CHOUDHURY

The BJP took a serious exception to the purported remarks by Congress veteran Digvijay Singh on the abrogation of Article 370 in J&K and demanded a probe by National Investigation Agency (NIA) into his "activities" in the wake of stands taken by him on several sensitive issues in the past.

State BJP president and Lok Sabha member Vishnu Dutt Sharma shot a letter to Union home minister Amit Shah demanding a probe into Mr Singh’s "activities" by NIA "urgently" while drawing his attention to the former chief minister’s clubhouse conversation in which a Pakistanbased journalist was reportedly present, criticising abrogation of Article 370.

“Mr Singh’s stand on several sensitive issues have not only proved detrimental to the interest of India, but also helped Pakistan strengthen its anti-India campaign. It was high time the Centre initiated a probe into all his activities ‘before it is too late’,” Mr Sharma said in his letter.

He cited how Mr Singh had made a shocking statement in the aftermath of the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai, seeking to portray it as a conspiracy by the RSS and how he defended the accused in the Batla encounter who were later convicted by the court.

“Mr Singh’s stands on many sensitive issues were found to be similar to those of Pakistan. This is a matter of serious concern for the country,” Mr Sharma said.

Mr Singh has made a “fashion” of attacking the sovereignty of India for appeasement and votebank politics, he added.

Chief minister Shivraj Singh also lambasted Mr Singh for describing abrogation of Article 370 as a “sad” decision by the Centre. “Kashmir is an integral part of the country. It was Congress which committed a sin by imposing article 370 in J&K,” Mr Chouhan said.

He called upon Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to come out with a clarification on the issue. “If Sonia Gandhi keeps mum on the issue, then it will be assumed that she is in agreement with Mr Singh on it,” he added.
