Rain brings Mumbai to a halt
Bus, train services hit after waterlogging at many places
Mumbai and its surrounding districts are likely to get extremely heavy rainfall on June 13 and 14. The Brihanmumai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a high alert asking Mumbaikars not to move out from their homes on these days.
According to Mumbai’s regional meteorological centre, the metropolis will receive thunderstorm with lightning, gusty winds and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places for the next couple of days. In addition to this, a “red alert” has been issued for Raigad and Ratnagiri districts, whereas Thane, Palghar and Sindhudurg districts will also receive heavy to very heavy rains.
Mumbai mayor Kishori Pednekar has issued a high alert in the city appealing to people to venture out only if it is absolutely necessary. The BMC has asked people not to visit the beaches and its nearby places.
She also said that strict action would be taken against those who are found dumping garbage in the drains and gutters, due to which clogging of drains takes places leading to waterlogging.
Mumbai has been witnessing heavy rains since Wednesday.
The train services between Dadar and Kurla stations on Central Railway were suspended in the afternoon after the water rose above the track level. The Central Railway official said, “Due to more than 61.21 mm rainfall in the last one hour, coupled with a high tide of 4.34 metres at 1.32 pm and closing of Mithi river floodgates, the water level has been rising on track between Kurla and Sion.”
A BEST official said that several of its buses had to be diverted at 17 locations due to waterlogging on roads.
