The Delhi police has arrested six women of a gang for allegedly trafficking new born babies, officials said on Saturday.

The accused have been identified as Priya Jain, Priya, Kajal, Rekha, Shivani, and Premvati, they said.

The gang, involved in trafficking of over 50 newborn babies, used to procure the babies from the parents belonging to poor financial background by offering them money and further sold the babies to the needy for a hefty amount, the police said.

On December 17, information was received that the members of a gang involved in trafficking of new born babies would come near Shamshan Ghat in Gandhi Nagar around 3.30 pm to sell an infant, the police said.

Thereafter, a raid was conducted and three women were apprehended from the spot who had a seven to eight-month-old boy. The following day, three more members of the gang were arrested and one baby girl was recovered from their possession, DCP (crime) Rajesh Deo said.

During interrogation, the accused persons revealed that a few of them came in contact with IVF centres and started donating their eggs to be used in the IVF process. During this process, they came in contact with several couples who had no children of their own and could not even get through the IVF process, the police said.

The gang had developed a unique modus operandi. They would identify a pregnant woman belonging to the poor section of society and strike a deal with her and her husband. When the child was born, they used to keep it in their custody, the police said.

They would simultaneously identify several possible buyers and circulate the child’s photograph among all touts through WhatsApp and sell the child to the one who agreed to buy, the DCP said.

Kajal and Priyanka are the masterminds of the gang. It is also learnt that the network of these accused persons is spread in other states also. Priyanka is absconding and efforts are being made to arrest the remaining accused persons, the police added.
