‘Construction work of STP at Coronation Pillar to be completed by February end’

-

The work on one of the country’s biggest Coronation Pillar Sewage Treatment Plant in Delhi is scheduled to be completed this month. The STP, which will treat 318 million gallons of wastewater every day, is being set up at an estimated cost of `515 crore, out of which `414 crore is the capital cost. The 50 per cent of the capital cost is borne by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG).

NMCG director general G. Asok Kumar recently took stock of the ongoing construction work of the plant and said the government has been working for the revival of Ganga and its tributaries across the country.

He said, “The pollution in River Yamuna has been a concern for the NGT and the Centre. The work on 318 MLD (million litre per day) Coronation STP is nearing completion and shall be completed by February end.”

Mr Kumar said that with the completion of the project, 318 MLD of wastewater will stop going into the Yamuna River.

He said that National Mission for Clean Ganga along with Delhi Jal Board has been working on 10 other STP projects in the national capital. He said that the work on all the projects went on considerably well even during the Covid-19 restrictions.

These projects are being monitored by the National Green Tribunal.

“The work on Okhla STP, Asia’s biggest STP, is also going on quite well and these projects will help in restoring the nirmalta of River Yamuna,” he said.

Delhi generates an estimated sewage flow of 3,273 MLD, out of which 2,340 MLD sewage is treated against the installed capacity of 2,624 MLD. There is a discharge of 933 MLD untreated sewage into River Yamuna.

A total of 12 projects for the treatment of 1,385 MLD sewage have been taken up at a cost of `2,354 crore under the Namami Gange Programme in Delhi to abate the pollution in Yamuna.

Mr Kumar said the work of building new plants and expanding the horizon of technical efficiency of old sewage treatment plants as well as laying and rehabilitating sewers is being tirelessly carried out.
