Shah reviews Assam border situation

Union home minister Amit Shah on Monday visited India-Bangladesh Internatio­nal Border in the Mankachar sector of western Assam and stressed the need for speedy developmen­t of the border areas. Mr Shah, who reviewed the situation along the Internatio­nal Border in a meeting attended by top home ministry and BSF officers, also discussed the future strategy to check immigratio­n, cross border terrorism and crimes like cattle and drugs smuggling.

Mr Shah also launched the sale of khadi products in 107 Central Armed Police forces canteens. All the canteens of paramilita­ry forces across the country will soon begin selling khadi products, the minister said.

The home minister said that there was lack of developmen­t in the border areas, leading to migration of people, and “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is constantly striving to bring developmen­t to these areas”. The BSF personnel posted along the border areas will be provided with the latest technology to boost security, he tweeted.

Earlier Mr Shah, who arrived on Sunday night was flown to Mankachar where he was welcomed by officials of the BSF and the state government at the border outpost.

The home minister, accompanie­d by home ministry and BSF officials, reviewed the border situation from an observatio­n tower set up for the occasion. He also interacted with local villagers, who had gathered in the area during his visit to the border outpost.

A flag march was also conducted by the border personnel of both India and Bangladesh in the presence of the union minister. Security sources said that Mr Shah took up issues related to infiltrati­on, cattle-smuggling, boundary fencing, river patrolling with senior BSF officials at the Sadartilla camp.
