‘I SEE LOTS OF CURATED NEGATIVITY’
Despite box office duds, Kangana still has hopes for 2022

Dhaakad is Kangana Ranaut’s ninth flop in a row — but its failure doesn’t seem to have fazed the actress. She has now started work on her film on the Emergency period in India, in which she plays the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Kangana is also directing the film.
“Dhaakad could sell only 20 tickets on the eighth day of its release and that is not a very healthy sign for an actress who has been known to carry films on her own shoulders. She has a fan following, but they are happy to just engage with her on social media and are not watching her films,” says a trade source.
“In fact if you look at the box office figures, after Tanu Weds Manu Returns, she has worked in films like I Love NY, Katti Batti, Rangoon, Simran, Manikarnika, Judgementall Hai Kya?, Panga and
Thalaivi besides Dhaakad. Some of them were disasters,” adds the source.
Her only success since 2015 has been her reality show Lock Upp which got a lot of eyeballs. But the Queen actress is still hopeful about her prospects in 2022.
“In 2019 I gave Manikarnika, a `160 crore super hit film;
2020 was a Covid year; in 2021 I gave the biggest film of my career, Thalavii, which came out on OTT and was a huge success. I see lots of curated negativity, but 2022 is the year of hosting the blockbuster Lock Upp and it’s not over yet... I have great hopes for it,” she posted.
The actress’ Tejas in which she plays a pilot is up for release. Kangana’s last actual hit film was the Tanu Weds Manu Returns directed by Aanand L Rai. She had earlier worked in huge box office hits like Tanu Weds Manu, Queen and Fashion and got a lot of accolades and awards for them. The only other film of hers to make an impact was Manikarnika which also fetched her a National Award, but it did not manage profits because its budget was huge.
