Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Jairam Ramesh, and Supriya Shrinate have received notices from the Karnataka High Court on Thursday on a contempt petition for using music from the movie KGF Chapter 2 during their Bharat Jodo Yatra without authorisation.

MRT Music, the company that controls the rights to the blockbuster’s music, filed a claim for contempt of court, and a bench comprising Chief Justice Prasanna B. Varale and Justice Ashok S. Kinagi issued the notices.

Earlier, the music firm discovered that the Congress party was marketing its Bharat Jodo Yatra campaign by using popular sound recordings and audio-visual songs from KGF Chapter 2. The leaders shared the marketing videos on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube,

Instagram etc. A local commissioner was instructed by the Additional City Civil & Sessions Judge in Bengaluru hearing the case to visit the Congress party website, conduct an electronic audit, and preserve materials that was thought to be infringing copyright. The judge also issued an injunction in MRT’s favour. The High Court subsequently ordered the Congress party to delete the material under dispute from all its social media hnadles. MRT has now alleged that despite the Court order, the content is still accessible on the social media accounts of the Congress party and filed the contempt complaint. The plea reads, “It is respectfully prayed that this Hon’ble High Court may be pleased to initiate appropriate action and/or proceedings for wilful disobedience and breach of the order dated November 8, 2022.” The Court has issued notices to t h e Congress party and the matter will be taken up next on January 12, 2023.
