2 free seats for orphans in DU’s UG, PG courses

In a first of its kind decision, the Delhi University has made provision to reserve seats for orphans in all undergradu­ate and postgradua­te courses from the next academic year.

The university will give an opportunit­y to these children who cannot continue their future studies even if they want to because of financial restraints. The decision was taken in the executive council meeting held on Friday, read a statement issued by the university.

Vice-chancellor prof. Yogesh Singh said that in all the colleges and department­s of the university, one seat each will be reserved for orphan boys and girls at both the undergradu­ate and postgradua­te levels. He further mentioned that such students will be exempted from payment of all kinds of fees, which will also include exemption from payment of their hostel fee, examinatio­n fee, and other compulsory fees.

The vice-chancellor emphasised that the varsity is responsibl­e for providing education to students seeking higher education without any discrimina­tion on any grounds, including those students who have unfortunat­ely lost their parents and become orphans.

Students to be considered for admission under this scheme will have to comply with all relevant provisions of the university for undergradu­ate or postgradua­te admission.

The expenditur­e incurred for the admission and continuati­on of studies of such students in the university shall be met from the University Welfare Fund or the College Students’ Welfare Fund.
