- AGE CORRESPONDENT with agency inputs NEW DELHI, MAY 30

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen. Anil Chauhan said on Tuesday that the situation in Manipur has nothing to do with counter-insurgency and is primarily a clash between two ethnicities. “It's a law and order kind of situation and we are helping the state government,” CDS said. The challenges in Manipur have not disappeared and it will takesome time but hopefully, they should settle down, CDS added.

Gen. Chauhan was in Pune on Tuesday to review the passing out parade of the 144th course of the National Defence Academy (NDA).

On LAC situation, General Chauhan said the deployment of People’s Liberation Army of China on India’s northern borders is not increasing day by day. “They haven't gone back. So, there is a challenge actually,” Gen. added.

“The armed forces are taking all kinds of steps so that there is no untoward situation... We have been able to get back to all places except two: Demchok and Depsang.

Negotiations are on,” he said. “Hopefully that will come about, we are hopeful of that,” he added. Till the time that comes about, there is a need to maintain constant vigil on the border, Gen. Chauhan said.

In his address to the cadets, Mr Chauhan spoke out the deployment of China’s PLA (People’s Liberation Army) along the northern borders.

“We see the war in Europe, the deployment of China’s PLA along the northern borders and geopolitical crisis in neighbouring countries. These crisis present a challenge to India, but the armed forces are firm to maintain the legitimacy of India’s claims and peace in the region,” he said.
