Marathas have to wait for few more mths for quota
The Maratha community in Maharashtra would have to wait for a couple of months more to realise its aspiration of getting the quota benefits. In a big disappointment for the community, the Maharashtra government has expressed its inability to provide reservation to Marathas before the December 24 deadline set up by the quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil.
Chief minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday announced that a special session of the state legislature will be held in February to grant reservation to the Maratha community after reviewing a report of the state backward class commission.
“Reservation is the right of the Maratha community and the state government is making all possible efforts to grant it to them. The state government is of the opinion that Maratha community should get quota benefits that will stand the legal test,” said Mr Shinde while replying to the debate on Maratha reservation issue in the Vidhan Sabha.
The state government is positive towards providing reservation to Marathas without affecting the OBC reservation. The backward class commission will submit its report in a month and after reviewing it, a special session of the State Legislature will be called in February to grant reservation to Marathas, said the CM.
Quota activist Jarange Patil had asked the state government to pass a bill in the Winter Session by setting a deadline of December 24 to provide reservation to Marathas under the OBC category. He has demanded that all Marathas should be given Kunbai certificates so that they can be included in the OBC category.
