Solar plants to be installed in 645 govt, MCD buildings

- AGE CORRESPONDENT

Under the solar policy, the Delhi government is set to install 50 megawatt (MW) grid-connected rooftop systems on 645 buildings of different departments and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

The total power capacity from these plants is projected to be 50 MW.

Power minister Atishi approved the solar plant installation initiative and said that the move is aligned with the recently approved Delhi Solar Policy, aimed at increasing solar power generation and usage across the city.

Under the scheme, around 645 Delhi government/MCD buildings with an area exceeding 500 square meters and encompassing educational institutions, healthcare facilities, DTC depots, DTL substations, and more will undergo the installation of solar power plants and

facilities.

“The Delhi Solar Policy, passed by the Cabinet on January 29, 2024, is being hailed as one of the best and most progressive policies in India. This policy is the key to expanding the use of solar power in Delhi’s green energy contribution and total power capacity,” the power minister said.

Ms Atishi said that despite the surge in electricity consumption in Delhi, their target is to generate 25 per cent of the

city’s electricity through solar power plants by 2027.

Launching the solar policy in January, Mr Kejriwal had said domestic consumers who are not covered by subsidy will also be able to get zero amount power bills on installation of rooftop plants.

The Delhi government provides free power supply to people having a monthly consumption of upto 200 units and those having 201400 units monthly consumption get a 50 per cent subsidy.
