The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, passed by the Uttarakhand Assembly in February, has become a law with President Daoupadi Murmu giving her assent to it.

“The Uniform Civil Code, 2024 was granted assent by the President on March 11 and is being published for the information of the public,” the gazette notification issued by the Uttarakhand government said on March 12.

Reacting to the notification, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami thanked Ms Murmu for ratifying the bill and said that the law will soon be effectively implemented in the state.

“It is a moment of great joy and pride for the people of Uttarakhand that president Draupadi Murmu has given her nod to the UCC bill passed by the state Assembly. The UCC will homogenise citizen rights and opportunities in the state. Besides, it will help curb the oppression of women as well. The UCC law will be crucial in promoting harmony and social equality across the communities in the state” Mr Dhami said.

The bill to bring the UCC was passed in the state Assembly on February 6. It was sent for governor’s assent a few days later. Uttarakhand governor Gurmit Singh subsequently recommended the bill to the President for final ratification.

Uttarakhand officials informed that following the gazette notification, the “Implementation of the UCC will be expedited soon as a committee to frame a rule manual has been constituted,” Shailesh Bagoli, secretary to the chief minister, said

Mr Dhami had promised the UCC to the people of Uttarakhand as an electoral plank on the eve of the 2022 Assembly polls. After his return to power, the chief minister constituted an experts panel to draft the bill.

The panel presented the report in January following which it was cleared by the state Cabinet and tabled in the February session of the state Assembly.
