Mamata, gov visit Jalpaiguri, take stock of storm aftermath

West Bengal governor C.V. Ananda Bose and chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday took stock of the devastatio­n in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar a day after a Tornado claimed five lives and left several people injured and homeless in the two districts in the North of the state.

The nature’s fury, as per sources at the office of CEO West Bengal, destroyed 11 polling booths in the two districts which along with another in the region will go to the first phase of Lok Sabha election on April 19. Worried, union home minister Amit Shah spoke to Ms Banerjee and two other CMs.

He stated on X-handle, “I am deeply concerned about the massive damage caused by the storm in

West Bengal, Assam and Manipur. Spoke to chief ministers and assured all possible assistance. I offer my sincere condolence­s to the families of the deceased and wish the injured a speedy recovery. Requesting all BJP functionar­ies to stand by the victims in this time of crisis and help them in all possible ways.”

Mr Bose, who reached North Bengal in the morning said, “There has been loss of lives in the storm in Jalpaiguri. Many are injured. I am worried I have spoken with the concerned department. Everyone is working together to deal with the situation. I will go there and take stock of the situation.”

Ms Banerjee, accompanie­d by her cabinet colleague Aroop Biswas, rushed to Jalpaiguri on Sunday night and supervised relief and rehabilita­tion work. She also visited the injured admitted at hospitals and the homeless at the relief camps. Her MP nephew Abhishek Banerjee joined her later.

Ms Banerjee said, “I took stock of the situation and met those who lost their houses and are now at the relief camps. I was in Jalpaiguri for the entire night. Today, I have reached here in Alipurduar and spoke to the families at the relief camp. Many houses were completely destroyed. People could not recover anything.”
