ED politicising what i ate in jail: CM
Accusing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) of being “petty” and “politicising” what he ate in Tihar jail, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday asserted before a Delhi court that the food he consumed was in conformity with the diet chart prepared by his doctor.
The court reserved its order on Mr Kejriwal’s application seeking daily consultation with his doctor for Monday and directed the jail authorities to file a reply, if required, by Saturday.
Later in the day, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh alleged that a “deep conspiracy” is being hatched against Mr Kejriwal and that any kind of accident could happen with him in prison.
He claimed that the BJP can stoop to the level of even “killing someone” and demanded action against officials allegedly involved in the “conspiracy to jeopardise the life” of Mr Kejriwal.
He said that the party leaders will meet the Election Commission and the President of India to raise the issue.
Delhi minister Atishi said Mr Kejriwal has filed an application that he be provided insulin and medicines.
A day earlier, she alleged that there was a plot to kill Mr Kejriwal by denying him home-cooked food and
insulin in prison, a charge rejected by the Tihar jail authorities.
“Why are the Centre, Enforcement Directorate, and Tihar (administration) opposing it? We heard of such things were done to inmates before Independence. This is a big conspiracy,” she said.
“Under which legal provision did the Tihar administration share (Kejriwal’s health-related information) with the Enforcement Directorate? The probe agency has only one job—to investigate money laundering. Did the AAP mix cash in his rotis? Why were details shared with the ED? Why did the ED file these in court?” Ms Atishi asked.
The ED had on Thursday claimed before the court that Mr Kejriwal was eating food high in sugar like mangoes and sweets every day, despite having type 2 diabetes, to create grounds for medical bail.
On Thursday, Mr Kejriwal’s counsel launched a spirited assault on the ED over its claim that the AAP national convenor was eating food laden with sugar so he could fall ill and seek bail on medical grounds.
Referring to the ED’s claim about the politician eating mangoes, sweets, aalo-poori, etc. regularly, senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi said these were provided to him only a few times.
Mr Kejriwal, who had on Thursday withdrawn a petition for consulting his doctor thrice a week about his fluctuating sugar levels, moved a fresh plea on Friday seeking consultations with his physician for 15 minutes every day.
The ED opposed Mr Singhvi’s submissions, claiming the food Mr Kejriwal was eating did not match the diet chart prescribed by his doctor.
