Cong ‘war room’ coordinator held in Assam for Shah video
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said Assam police has arrested a person in connection with the fake video involving Union home minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Amit Shah.
In a social media post, Mr Sarma said a person — identified as Reetom Singh (Reetam Singh) — has been arrested by Assam police in the case. The police has taken the accused into their custody and have proceeded with the probe.
A purported video of Union home minister Amit Shah was doing rounds on social media, in which it was claimed that the “BJP would end the reservation for SC, ST, and OBC if voted to power”.
However, in the original footage, Mr Shah claimed that the BJP would end the reservation given to the Muslim community. He also called the reservation given to Muslims “unconstitutional”.
It is significant that Mr Singh’s bio on “X” reveals he is the war room coordinator of Assam Congress. He has been arrested by Assam police over posting edited videos and abusive contents on social media.
Being a vocal against the ruling BJP, Mr Singh had recently urged people to slam/criticise openly on social media Modi-BJP govt, Mr Himanta, any minister/MLA/MPs of BJP. However, he cautioned them to not post “life threatening” messages online.
Mr Singh also assured those voicing their antiBJP opinions: “Team of reputed senior lawyers and legal professionals across Assam and India will make sure you are never arrested. Will do your case for free.”
Assam police in a statement said that based on the complaint regarding circulation of a distorted and motivated tweet on the Union home minister, a case has been registered and two mobile phones and one personal laptop have been seized from his possession.
