AAP organises walkathon, calls BJP ‘washing machine’

- AGE CORRESPONDENT NEW DELHI, MAY 5

A day after the three AAP candidates filed their nominations papers, the party’s top leaders, including Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, Delhi state convenor Gopal Rai, minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, Lok Sabha candidate Somnath Bharti and mayor Shelly Oberoi held a walkathon on Sunday. The party held the walkathon in Rajinder Nagar under the ‘Jail Ka Jawab Vote Se’ campaign with a large number of volunteers carrying party’s flags and cutouts of chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Saying that the walkathon is a good way to convey the message to the people, Mr Singh said we will go the people like this to make them aware what has been going on in the country after 2014. “The Modi washing machine” is washing away the “stains of corruption of the corrupt people” across the country, he said.

AAP’s three Lok Sabha candidates - Kuldeep Kumar from East Delhi, Somnath Bharti from New Delhi and Mahabal Mishra from West Delhi constituencies - filed their nomination papers in the presence of the top party leaders on Saturday. One other candidate from South Delhi Sahi Ram Pehalwan filed his nomination paper earlier on Tuesday last week. The AAP is contesting four of the seven Lok Sabha seats in alliance with the Congress in Delhi.

During the walkathon, AAP’s Delhi state convenor Mr Rai said that the BJP has thrown chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was elected with a thumping majority, in jail in the midst of the elections without any evidence and FIR. “There is a lot of anger among the people of the city against the arrest of Mr Kejriwal. Every section of the society including the youth, women and elders is extremely saddened by the arrest of Mr Kejriwal. The people are asking why instead of seeking votes on the basis of work, the BJP has picked up a working chief minister and put him in jail?, said Mr Rai.

During the walkathon, Mr Bharadwaj targeted

BJP terming them as washing machine. He took a dig at BJP by mentioning Ashok Chavan, Praful Patel and Naveen Jindal and others who were allegedly involved in corruption but the moment they joined hand with PM Modi they became spotless and were even given Lok Sabha tickets and one of them was made deputy CM of Maharashtra.

Taking a dig at AAP, Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said that the people want the tainted associates of Mr Kejriwal to tell that apart from Sonia Gandhi family who is on bail, the Lalu Yadav family is facing disproportionate assets case, leaders like Akhilesh Yadav and Hemant Soren are facing corruption charges and yet they all claim to be honest.
