Drug peddler shot in encounter with police at Lahorijan

DIPHU, Oct 26: Sensation prevails at Lahorijan under Bokajan subdivisio­n in Karbi Anglong district following an encounter that took place between police and drug peddlers last evening, during which a peddler was reportedly shot dead.

As per reports available, an input came to the incharge of Lahorijan patrolling police post on Sunday evening regarding a huge consignmen­t of banned drugs being carried by a group of three to four drug peddlers. Soon after the report was received, frisking operations were intensifie­d by police at several locations.

In the meantime, three persons who were roaming in a suspicious manner were asked to stop by police of Lahorijan patrolling post around 6.30 pm. But, defying the police order, they reportedly opened fire on the men in uniform. The police retaliated, and later, a drug peddler was found dead at the spot, sources informed.

The other two peddlers escaped towards Dimapur, the sources added.

It may be mentioned here that altogether 20 soap boxes containing banned heroin, one 7.65 pistol and 20 rounds of live ammunition were recovered from a bag that the peddlers carried. According to sources, the contraband weighed 626 grams and the market value was estimated to be around Rs 5 crore.
