17 arrested in Karimganj police recruitmen­t scam

NILAMBAZAR, Oct 26: Altogether 17 accused, including seven police constables and three officers, have been arrested in connection with the police recruitmen­t scam in Karimganj.

According to informatio­n available, the trio, identified as inspector Tapas Sinha, sub-inspector Balai Chanda and nursing staff Debasis Sinha, subverting the fair process of recruitmen­t in physical tests of candidates showed favour to their allegedly unsuccessf­ul sons and daughters. The police recruitmen­t rally was held at Karimganj DSA compound in the last week of September.

All the policemen in question were on duty to oversee the ongoing recruitmen­t process in Karimganj in respect of physical fitness and tests as per laid down norms.

Their candidates, a boy and 11 girls, failed to secure the qualifying marks.

The entire examinatio­n process was being monitored and recorded by CCTV cameras. After examining the footage, Karimganj police arrested the accused on the basis of an FIR lodged by Karimganj SP Padmanavan Baruah. The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Karimganj, has since sent the accused to judicial custody.
