Pathetic state of Navi Mumbai Post offices

-

Post offices at Navi Mumbai are in such a pathetic condition that the staff works from thatched huts and/or discarded/dilapidated buildings without any amenities such as chairs/tables/tools etc, leave alone electrical connections for very basic needs such as fans and lights! Telegraph services are gone but postal services are still in place and these will be here for decades to come, so this appalling neglect is puzzling. During the tenure of Madam Nurjehan, a lot of measures were put into place to enhance various postal facilities – like quality stationery, post cards, inlands, self-sticking envelopes of international standard, both in size and quality; not to forget the enhancement of staff salaries so as to ensure adequate recruitment for manning post offices adequately; providing several counters at the GPO to do away with crowding and also providing proper seating for the general public as they awaited their turn - whatever has happened to those trend-setting laudable improvement, I wonder? Incidentally and secondarily, a number of activists/writers live in that area, but have failed to highlight this important segment of service providers. -Purna Chakravorty,
