What the youth can do for our country!
Our youngsters seem to be more interested in getting big jobs that offer them fat salary and leading a comfortable cushy life. Although they appear modern, beneath the surface we find them conservative and medieval in their attitudes. They are least bothered about the issues concerning the country. It is time they remember what John F Kennedy had said to his countrymen: “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” The youth can do a lot for the country. After all, they are the future of the country. Some issues they must address include: Corruption in public life is a serious destabilising factor. It is the root cause of exploitation and injustice in society. It is important that the youth raise their voice against corruption and combat the culture of bribing. Second, in spite of these noble ideals mentioned in the Preamble to the constitution, people are denied freedom and opportunities even after 66 years of independence. The youth can make a difference first by subscribing to these ideals and then spreading them. Third, though the reservation policy seeks to uplift the deprived and the under privileged, it is grossly abused. If not corrected, it may lead to civil unrest in society. The youth should believe in self worth and work hard to achieve success. Lastly, it is the responsibility of the youth to take interest in public affairs. Political apathy is not good for an open, liberal and democratic society. If the political system is rotten, it is our duty to reform it. But hating politicians and shunning politics is no solution to problems confronting the nation. People are becoming increasingly intolerant. One of the cherished virtues of India from time immemorial is tolerance. The youth can promote a culture of tolerance and peaceful co-existence. That is the only way of preserving freedom and democracy and the unity and integrity of our diverse society.
