Respect is to be commanded

-

The article ‘Rude Awakenings’ ( Knowledge, August 12) sets in motion a healthy debate. The BMM student has appropriately observed the point about teachers affecting the student’s mind with such remarks. Scientifically speaking, body is the part of mind. Therefore, passing rude comments in the class is nothing short of corporal punishment. Because it is the mind that directs, demonstrates, dictates, dissects and disintegrates body. Rightfully enough, students look upon their teachers as role models of a friend, philosopher and guide seeking a word of encouragement and appreciation, which in turn boosts their confidence and spirit of tolerance. Needless to say, classroom decorum cannot be maintained without an element of discipline. However, discipline should not be considered synonymous with humiliation in public as a deterrent measure. It would have an adverse effect upon students. Teachers justifying their dictatorship in the name of discipline must remember that goodwill generates goodwill, love begets love. Above all, respect is not to be demanded, it has to be commanded. It is always rewarding to appreciate in public. As far as possible, they need to avoid insulting students. In it is difficult to avoid, handle it privately. After all, what is the use of the power of speech endowed upon teachers but to create harmonious relationships?
