Microbiology or nutrition?
I am a BSC biotechnology graduate. I want to pursue my master’s in either microbiology or nutrition and dietetics. Which of these fields has a good scope in India?

Dear Uma,
The health sector is pick ing up fast in India, and nutritionists form an integral part of healthcare. With increased awareness in this field, career prospects seem bright.
Microbiology is a different field altogether and involves applying scientific principles to materials to obtain results. The microorganisms involved could be part of plant or animal cells. There are also specialised fields like industrial microbiology, food microbiology and so on.
Which field you want to opt for is up to you, since you are making this choice at the postgraduation level, and none of these choices are directly related to your undergraduate degree.
As nutritionist and dietician, you can consider working for organisations which are involved in manufacture and research of new food products. There are also research labs, catering options, hospitals, fitness centres and spas that you can work for.
Also, while there is no formal ranking or listing of the best institutes/ universities for the specified field of interest in India, there are some good institute options that you have. Think well before you make your choice.
