Dairy owner freed after torturing a child helper

- SURESH GOLANI

The Kashimira police had arrested the 28-year-old dairy shop owner for keeping a 12-year-old child helper captive and repeatedly torturing him for almost three months. The matter came to light when the victim identified as Bhola Bhairavlal (12), who worked as an errand boy at M.M. Hotel, was sent to deliver packets of milk at a nearby building. A woman from the building spotted scars and deep injury marks on Bhola’s back, shoulder and hands. When asked about the cause, the child burst into tears and revealed that he suffered regular thrashing at the hands of his employer – Nirbhay Singh (28) who had brought him from Rajasthan. It was revealed that Singh would brutally assault the child on the flimsiest of reasons. After dilly-dallying over the issue, the police arrested Singh and charged him under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 374 (unlawful compulsory labour) and 344 (wrongful confinement) of the IPC and the relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice Act and Prevention of Child Labour Act. However, the statements made by sources later claimed that instead of filing an FIR, police allowed the culprit to go scot-free.
