Moving a step ahead in burying differences in the alliance, the Congress and NCP have agreed to break alliance with other parties who are not part of the ruling Democratic Front in the state. Congress had been insisting on this arrangement with the NCP since the last few months to ensure a lasting alliance in the next general elections.

On its part, the NCP finally agreed so as to ensure full support of the Congress during the by-poll for the Legislative Council. Dhananjay Munde is contesting as a NCP candidate.

“The process of breaking alliance will start from Kolhapur and will be completed in two months,’’ NCP chief spokesperson Nawab Mallik announced. In Kolhapur, the Congress had joined hands with rebel NCP leaders and independents.

NCP ditched Congress in Yavatmal Zilla Parishad when they joined hands with opposition parties to keep Congress away from power. with NCP. Yavatmal is Home district of Congress state president Manikrao Thakre and for the first time Congress lost power in Yavatmal ZP since ZP’s foundation.

In Nagpur, Amravati, Chandrapur, Gondia and Gadchiroli ZP too, NCP had joined hands with BJP. In Ratnagiri, it joined hands with Shiv Sena.

Congress too had done this in Nagar Parishads or Municipal Corporations.

In Chandrapur Municipal Corporation, it has joined hands with Shiv Sena to keep NCP away from the power.

Meanwhile, senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde's

estranged nephew Dhananjay, who joined NCP last month, filed papers as Sharad Pawar-led party's nominee for next month's bypoll to Maharashtra Legislative Council on Thursday.

The bypoll, scheduled for September 2, is being held to fill the vacancy caused by his resignation as BJP MLC elected by members of the Legislative Assembly.

Dhananjay resigned as a member of the Upper House on July 2 and joined NCP, which is part of the Congress-led ruling coalition in the state. His term of office would have, in the normal course, ended on July 7, 2016.

The last date of filing nominations is August 23. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and all key leaders of both parties were present at the time of nomination.
