Techie held for installing 4G tower in Mulund garden
Released on a bail of Rs.15,000
In the first arrest in connection with causing hazard to citizen’s health by installing mobile tower, the Mulund police on Wednesday arrested an engineer of a prominent mobile telecommunication company for the installation of 4G tower at a civic garden in Mulund west.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Kirit Somaiya had registered a case against the contractors of the company with the Mulund police on Sunday. The contractors were charged under sections 269 (Negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), 270 (Malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), 278 (Making atmosphere noxious to health) and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
The telecommunication company had recently constructed the mobile tower for its 4G services on the BMC playground in Ashok Nagar, Mulund west. Earlier, when the locals had opposed the construction of the tower, the telecommunication company staff had allegedly threatened them that they would destroy their slums following which the locals approached the corporators of the area and a complaint was registered.
“We sent out a legal notice to the telecommunication company following which the engineer produced himself at the police station along with other officials from the company. He was arrested on Wednesday morning,” said an official associated with the Mulund police station.
The official added that the engineer was produced before the Mulund court and was released on a bail of Rs.15,000.
Meanwhile, Prakash Munshi, an activist who has been fighting for the cause said, “The government must take necessary action to bring down radiation levels. We need stricter laws. If things are done illegally and if there are law provisions to prevent such illegal works, then I believe that they should be Implemented and executed.”
