Now, LEDs will replace metal halides at CST
The move is expected to help CR save Rs 6,000 daily on electricty
With Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the nation to switch to powersaving Light Emitting Diodes (LED), the Central Railway (CR) is all set to replace the metal halides inside the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) suburban station with LED lights in the coming months.
About 255 light fittings consisting of the huge metal halides across the seven suburban platforms, including the concourse, will be changed to LED lights.
The switch to these LED lights is expected to be completed before the monsoon season, which will help CR authorities cut down on their overall electricity costs.
The change in the lighting system will come at a cost of Rs 55 lakh, but it will help the authorities save about Rs 6,000 on electricity costs per day.
“It will bring down our power bills by 50 per cent and also increase illumination inside the station premises,” said an official from CR. Officials added that this will also help in boosting security, as the station will be well-lit.
About 255 light fittings of 250 watt and 150 watt will be replaced with 120 watt and 80 watt respectively, which will have improved lux (measurement of brightness).
“There are two types of new generation lights available — LED and plazma. The plazma ones prove to be costly while these LEDs are convenient and extremely cost effective,” added the official.
Also, the lights inside three local trains, both on Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR) lines, have been changed to LEDs on a trial basis. After observing these three coaches, LEDs will be put in place across all the trains running on the suburban section.
