Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis spent Tuesday night at a farmer’s house in a small village, Pimpri Buti, in Vidarbha’s Yavatmal district, where he held discussions about the causes behind farmers’ suicides and possible ways to stop the same.

According to an official release issued here on Wednesday, Fadnavis visited three villages in Yavatmal on Tuesday to review the causes behind the suicides of farmers.

After meeting farmers’ widows at Pimpri Buti village, he had dinner at a farmer’s house and spent the night there, the release said.

Yavatmal had acquired the dubious record of being the place where the maximum number of farmers’ suicides have taken place over the past few years.

“We have already started working on the long-term measures to facilitate sustainable irrigation. We have started the ‘Jalayukta Shivar’ scheme for water and soil conservation. We have released orders for the completion of work on irrigation wells. Most of the pending projects would be completed before June this year. The effects of these projects would be visible within the next three to four months,” the chief minister said at a meeting organised to understand the reasons behind the farmers’ suicides.

At another programme, Fadnavis also spoke about the relief package that the government had announced for the farmers.

“Over 90 lakh farmers in the state would benefit from the relief package and around 50 lakh farmers have received the relief funds in their bank accounts,” the chief minister said.

“We have been working on schemes keeping the depression of farmers in consideration. We are planning for long-term loan schemes,” he said.

The government is also contemplating ways to make farming a profitable profession, the chief minister added.
