Accidental death case detected as kidnapping, murder in 24 hrs

- STAFF REPORTER

The Mumbai police detected an accidental death case of a 24-year-old man as a kidnapping and murder case within a span of 24 hours. The man was allegedly flung alive from the Vakola flyover in Santacruz by four truck drivers after he had picked up a fight with them on Tuesday.

The deceased, who was a resident of Reti Bunder, Sewri, has been identified as Ashraf Iqbal Mujavar. His family had filed a missing complaint with the Sewri police on Tuesday.

“After speaking to Mujavar’s family, we learnt that he used to spend most of his time at a truck parking lot near the Sewri jetty. A few truck drivers there told us that he had picked up a fight with four truck drivers on Tuesday,” said an official from Sewri police station.

The police found that the four truck drivers were untraceable after which they checked the routes which the four truck drivers traveled on and inquired in all the police stations in that route if any bodies were found.

While searching the routes, the Sewri police found that their counterpart in Vakola had registered a case of death caused by rash and negligent driving on the same day. “After we verified that the body in the accident case was Mujavar’s, we returned to check if the drivers had come back,” the official said.

The four truck drivers were detained after they returned to the parking on Tuesday night after which they were all questioned separately. The official added, “One of the truck drivers admitted to the crime. He told us that Mujavar would drink and pick up unnecessary fights with the truck drivers. Frustrated by the same, they kidnapped him on Tuesday and threw him alive from the Vakola flyover. Mujavar died as he fell from a height of over 35 feet.”
