- STAFF REPORTER

The traffic police, in a special twoday drive for Holi booked over 14,000 motorists for various traffic violations. The maximum number of violations were related to motorists not wearing helmets.

The drive was started on Thursday at 3 pm where 1,500 traffic police constables and 100 officers were deployed for traffic bandobast all over the city. In all, 70 spots were covered by the traffic police in the drive where they focussed on traffic violations such as drunken driving, rash driving, riding triple seat on a motorbike and riding on motorbikes without helmet.

Mumbai witnessed a safe and peaceful Holi, which can be put to the credit of the traffic police’s strict bandobast. On Thursday, 130 people were booked for drunk driving, 263 for not wearing helmets, 10 for riding triple seat, six for rash driving under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and 2501 were booked for other violations.

Whereas until Friday afternoon, which was the day of Holi celebration, 279 motorists were booked for drunk driving, 4851 for not wearing helmets, 243 for riding triple seat, 80 under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and 6484 were booked for other violations.

Last year the traffic police had carried out a similar drive for four days and booked 15,557 motorists for various traffic violations. In addition, the number of drunk drivers then was 789.

Besides the traffic police, the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) too did not record any incidents of violence or miscreants throwing water balloons or pelting stones on commuters in trains.

The city police, who had carried out their bandobast in slums situated on railway tracks, in communally sensitive and crowded areas, too did not record any untoward incidents.
