Relief for Andheri commuters
Work order to construct 'Telli Galli' Road-overbridge, which was proposed in 2012, gets BMC nod
After a long wait of four years, commuters of Andheri will have some relief as the municipal corporation has finally issued the work order to construct the 'Telli Galli' Road-over-bridge, which was proposed in 2012. The 570 meter-long road over bridge will connect N S Phadke Marg Junction and Telli Galli in Andheri (east). This ROB is expected to ease traffic at two vital bottlenecks at two small but crowded junctions of Telli Galli and Hotel Regency along this road, especially during peak hours.
The ROB, which will cater to both heavy and light vehicles, will take up to 24 months to complete and is estimated to cost Rs 75 crore. The proposed ROB will have two lanes on either side, carrying vehicular traffic estimated to be over 25,000 vehicles per day, based on a primary survey conducted by the BMC's bridges department. The development plan proposes an additional road ahead of the Regency junction, which is expected to further clog traffic in this area in the coming years, if this bridge is not constructed.
In order to facilitate smooth vehicular traffic even during the construction period, the civic body will temporarily remove the existing one lane parking provision on either side of the present road. A senior civic official said, “Apart from easing traffic jams, the ROB has an additional advantage. After the bridge is constructed, there will be no traffic underneath it and we may be able to create additional parking space also.”
Due to major traffic heading towards Andheri, the civic body has also constructed a subway for pedestrians, as part of this project. The subway will cost approximately Rs two crore. The BMC has hired Technogem for consultancy work of structural technicalities during the construction of the ROB.
