BJP corporator collects bicycles to help Latur children in education
While the State government is reaching out to people in drought-hit Latur with the Jaldoot Express that carries water to the region, a BJP corporator from Matunga, Rajeshree Shirwardkar, has started collecting bicycles from people in her locality to give to children in Latur.
The idea is to help children reach schools since many have to walk long distances to reach their schools.
Shirwardkar plans to collect 500 cycles from Matunga, Mahim, Dadar and Sion areas. Rajeshree will be undertaking repair of these cycles before distributing them to children in Latur and Murtijapur. She has started distributing handbills in these areas to spread awareness about the initiative and will also be putting ads in newspapers.
Kumar Walia is the one who has decided to donate his son’s cycle to this cause. He got to know about the initiative through WhatsApp. “Some of us who don’t have cycles have shown interest to donate money so that new cycles can be given to the children,” he said.
“Some people said they will buy new cycles to donate for the cause,” said Rajesh, Shirwadkar’s husband and General Secretary, BJP
