Engineering consultancy firm RITES is currently working on a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for extending the Navi Mumbai Metro line to connect with the proposed airport.

According to City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), which is the planning authority for the airport, RITES is preparing the DPR on the Peak Hour Passenger Peak Direction Traffic (PHPDT) and alignment of the entire metro line.

The Navi Mumbai metro line has been divided into four phases. A senior CIDCO official said, “At present, 90 per cent of the civil works on viaducts has been completed on the first phase of the operations on the 11 km stretch from Belapur to Pendhar. While, 60 per cent station work is completed and 60 percent work on the depot at Taloja has been completed.”

The estimated cost of constructing the four phases of the Navi Mumbai metro line (including future connectivity to Mumbai and Dombivli) is Rs 11,000 crore.

Around 11 stations are planned on the first phase of the Navi Mumbai Metro line. The extended lines of Navi Mumbai metro line has been divided into phases, second phase has been planned from Pendhar to Taloja, third phase From Taloja to Khadeshwar and from Khadeshwar to NMIA.

Once the DPR of the extended line is submitted by RITES, around five stations would be added to the existing 11 stations in the first phase of the metro line.

The first phase of the metro line would provide connectivity to areas in Kharghar, Belapur and Taloja. In future, the metro line could provide connectivity to areas of Kalamboli, Kamote and Mansarovar, in addition to providing connectivity to suburban stations of Khadeshwar and Belapur.

“Based on the DPR, a decision would be taken whether to construct an underground metro line or an elevated metro line from Khandeshwar to NMIA,” said a CIDCO official.
