‘Easy pickings’ for engg students

Over 64,000 vacant seats to choose from in engg special round

- BHAVNA UCHIL

In the optional fourth round (CAP Round IV) of engineering admissions, candidates will have 64,822 seats to choose from.

This round is for those who have not been allotted any seats in the previous three rounds or those who had not been able to participate in the rounds since they had not filled the option form. It is also applicable to those who had taken and cancelled their admissions in the previous rounds and those who had confirmed (freezed) admission in a college and wanted a change in college or stream.

Those who had opted for ‘float’ and ‘slide’ in earlier rounds are also eligible for this round as well as those who had been allotted a seat in earlier rounds but had not reported to the Admission Reporting Centre (ARC).

CAP Round IV has been newly introduced for admissions this academic year.

With only around 71,000 candidates confirming admissions after the traditional three rounds of admission are over, many seats are still vacant. There were about 1,41,000 seats available for first year engineering admissions in the state.

While 1,09,000 students had registered for admissions and even lesser 1,02,000 had completed the application filling procedure.

Engineering admissions dates may be extended

The Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) which is in charge of engineering admissions is mulling extending engineering admission process till August 30.

“Since medical admissions have been delayed because of NEET (National Eligibility and Entrance Test) this year, students who do not get admissions in medicine may want to come into engineering,” said Dayanand Meshram, Joint Director, DTE.

The DTE had sent a proposal to the state government for extending the date. It has already got the government’s nod to approach the Supreme Court in this regard.

“We are taking legal opinion whether to approach the court, since the SC had turned down the Orissa government’s petition in this regard. But if we do get relaxation, we can keep it that way every year,” he added.

As per a 2012 Supreme Court judgement, admissions to all professional courses must be completed before August 15.
