Plan to produce power from solid waste in offing!
In a bid to make good use of the piling garbage at the dumping grounds, the civic body has planned to scientifically work on solid waste to generate electricity. Experts have estimated that about 3,000 tonnes of garbage can be used to generate 25-30 megawatts of electricity.
The waste to energy project’s cost is estimated up to Rs 1,000 crore. A senior MGCM official said that this is inclusive of post generation waste disposal too.
Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta on Tuesday met officials from the TATA Consulting Engineers LTD (TCE) for discussing the plan to generate electricity using solid waste.
The MCGM had appointed TCE to study the possibilities of waste to energy project at the Deonar dumping ground after a massive fire broke out at the dumping.
At the meeting, the TCE officials proved the feasibility of projecting the waste to energy plant at the Deonar dumping ground. The TCE officials presented a report on various scientific ways to generate power from garbage. The report pointed out that the project will be India’s largest waste to energy project.
A senior civic official said, “The report is impressive and will prove as India’s biggest waste to energy project. The corporation is assured with the project which will benefit the city.”
The proposed project will require 14.2 hectares of space at the Deonar dumping ground. The officials also estimated that the project duration will be for 25 years.
A proposal was tabled at the corporation’s Standing Committee meeting in February 2016 to appoint TCE as consultant to study the entire project. Even after the opposition parties raised objections to the proposal, the proposal was eventually passed by the 26member committee.
