State working on changes to Atrocities Act
The state government has come up with a few suggestions for the amendment of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. According to sources, the state has recommended that compensation should not be given to a complainant as soon as a case under the Act is registered.
The compensation will be given only after the trial is completed. However, in case of a rape and murder; or if a person’s house is set on fire the victim or his family will be compensated immediately. These recommendations will be discussed with senior BJP leaders during the national council meet which is starting in Calicut today.
In the wake of the massive crowds that the silent Maratha rallies are attracting in the state, a high level meeting of BJP leaders has also been organised in Calicut on the sidelines of the BJP National Council meeting to discuss the matter.
During the three-day national council meet, BJP President Amit Shah, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, BJP state president Raosaheb Danve, senior leader Chandrakant Patil, Vinod Tawde will meet and discuss the Maratha reservation issue.
According to a senior leader of BJP, Amit Shah will be apprised of the details of the silent morchas during the meeting. “We will discuss the issue of reservation with senior BJP leaders and the demand of changes in the Atrocity Act,” a BJP functionary said requesting anonymity.
