Police file FIR after wife of man who ended life

- STAFF REPORTER

The Malvani police have registered a case against the wife of a 30-year-old man who ended his life by hanging himself in his house after she claimed that she was having an affair with another person.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening when Jay Manjrekar was found hanging in his house at Jan Kalyan Nagar in Malad (W). Sources said that some neighbours noticed that the man was hanging from the ceiling with the help of a shawl and they immediately informed the police about this. The body was brought down and taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead before admission.

In a police statement, the victim’s father, Suresh Manjrekar (69), said that his son was staying with his wife Sheetal and their daughter Dhwani in this house and that he was working with a private firm. “Since about a year, the couple had been having regular fights since he suspected her of having a relation with a person by the name of Mahindran Swamy,” he said.

A few days ago the wife had gone off to stay with her parents and the victim had been staying alone with his father, the police said. The father said that his son had got upset after she left their house and he had tried to calm him down, the police said.

A couple of days before the incident, the father had gone to Baroda for some work and he noticed that his son had tried calling him. “When I called him on his mobile phone, my son said that he was going to commit suicide and he had left a suicide note in the house,” the father said. On hearing about the suicide plan, the father got panicky and tried to convince his son not to commit such an act.

Further, he requested an acquaintance to go over to their house and check why his son was talking like this, the police said. However, when the father reached Mumbai he was shocked to see that his son had died of hanging and a suicide note was recovered that blamed his wife, his in-laws and Swamy for this death.

A senior officer from Malad police station confirmed that an FIR has been lodged against these four persons under sections 306 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. “The case has been registered for abetment to suicide and we are carrying out further investigations in the matter,” he said.
