Modest start for India

It was a very modest start for the young Indian contingent as they were 44th at the end of the first round in the 30th World Amateur Team Championship (WATC) here.
The Indian team was lying 44th with a combined score of five-over 147, as the top two scores were taken into consideration.
Indira Lakhsminarayana Aalap, who trains with had the best round at two-over 74 with three birdies against five bogeys, while Faldo Series Asia winner, Arjun Prasad after a disastrous start from 10th had two doubles and a bogey to turn in five over. But he then had an eagle on the front nine of the course to finish at 74.
The third Indian in the field, Naved Kaul shot five-over 76 with three bogeys and a double. All three Indians played at the par71 Mayakoba course. They will now play at the Par-72 Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club ins second round.
Scotland posted a 10-underpar score and leads Australia by one stroke. Connor Syme led Scotland with a 66, the low round of the day, at the par-72, 6,888-yard Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club. Spain was two strokes back in third place at 8 under. Ireland, Poland, and Thailand are tied for fourth at 6-under. USA, France, Japan, and Switzerland are tied for seventh at 5under.
The WATC is a biennial international amateur competition conducted by the International Golf Federation (IGF). In each round, the total of the two lowest scores from each team constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day total (72-hole) total is the team’s score for the championship. Teams that played Mayakoba El Camaleon in the first round will play Iberostar Playa Paraiso in the second round and vice versa.
