‘Days of Tafree,’ a remake of the Gujarati superhit ‘Chello Divas’ may have backtracked through the same reminisces that the original so charmingly put forth but in this case the treatment is shrill, the tomfoolery is offensive and the slapstick is unpardonably violence infused.
For those who’ve seen Israeli filmmaker Boaz Davidson’s hits ‘Lemon Popsicle’ and ‘Hot Bubblegum’ this ‘Tafree’ giri may seem familiar. Obviously the original inspiration might have come from the testosterone infused girl crazy risqué mayhem elaborated in those films. Unfortunately there’s no humor to keep the predicable offensiveness buoyant or bearable.
A series of unco-ordinated pranks and shenanigans pass off as plot and storyline. Characters here are abrasive and unapologetic about it. The writing basically tends to romanticise dysfunctions and make mental illnesses seem like a joke. There’s this ex-girlfriend who obvious seems to be compulsive, rattling off repetitive monologues every time she’s in the company of her soon-to-be ex-boyfriend.
The trick that ‘Pyar Ka Punchnama’ used as its USP, becomes a severe liability here. Clichés and stereotypes get the slap-stick treatment, the music is forgettable, the performances are more befitting to the Archie’s comic book series and the helming doesn’t appear to be tempered to suit audience sensibilities. There’s no respite here!
