Eyeing the mayoral post of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Shiv Sena councillor Yashwant Jadhav has emerged as a lead contender in the race for mayor’s post, a senior Sena leader confirmed. The mayoral elections are slated to be held on March 8. The councillors are expected to file their nominations on March 4.

Sena was earlier considering former mayors such as Milind Vaidya and Vishaka Raut for the mayoral post. However, a Sena leader said the party will now look for new faces like Yashwant Jadhav (who was recently declared as Sena’s group leader) and Ashish Chemburkar. Jadhav was elected from Wadi Bunder and Worli DairyDr. Annie Besant Marg.

Speaking exclusively to Free Press Journal, the Sena leader said, “For the mayoral post, Jadhav is being considered as he has worked in his ward for years. Also, Chemburkar seems to have a good chance for the post. The party is considering a new face for the mayor’s post.”

After emerging as the winning party with maximum number of seats (84) in the BMC elections, Sena has an option to take support of Congress that has won 31 seats in order to meet the total of 114 in order to form a majority in the civic body.

Another Sena leader told FPJ that it is difficult to assert the alliance status of the party as the BJP has emerged as a strong contender with 82 seats. The current Mayor is Snehal Ambekar has been re-elected Lower Parel. Interestingly, Ambekar was a first time Corporator when she was elected as the Mayor in 2014.

Sena was earlier considering former mayors such as Milind Vaidya and Vishaka Raut for the mayor’s post.
