Smooth ride for this baby girl!

- STAFF REPORTER

Late night commuters were in for a surprise on Wednesday when 21-year-old Sultana Irshad delivered a baby girl inside a local train at Dadar station with a little help from an RPF constable, Nirmala.

Sultana and her husband Arshad Sheikh were on their way to a private hospital at Byculla when she developed labour pains.

“Just past 10pm, a woman commuter in the adjacent coach pulled the chain after she saw Sultana screaming in pain. Some passengers rushed to the head constable on the platform and informed him about the medical emergency. The doctor at the medical room was soon informed about the situation,” said Nirmala Suryavanshi, the RPF lady constable.

Nirmala along with her colleagues cleared the coach of all male commuters so that the woman could deliver the baby inside the compartment. “The swift action by the RPF and the doctors helped saved the day for the woman and the baby.

Later, Sultana and her baby were admitted to the Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital in Sion for further medical care,” said an RPF inspector at Dadar station.

Both Sultana and her baby girl are now doing well at the hospital in Soin. She is all praises for the RPF and the doctors at Dadar station. “My husband was worried when I developed labour pain and was clueless about what to do. My baby is indeed a lucky child,” Sultana said.

There was some talk about the railways offering life-time free journeys to the child when she grows up, but senior officials said there is no such provision in railway rules.
