- STAFF REPORTER

Eighty-three days after she landed in Mumbai, Egyptian national Eman Ahmed, once the heaviest woman in the world at 500kg, left the city on Thursday evening.

The 37-year-old was discharged from Saifee hospital at around 12.40 pm for treatment in the UAE.

Minister of Public Health Deepak Sawant was present at the hospital to oversee the entire process, especially signing of documents. “Officials from VPS Healthcare in Abu Dhabi, where she will be treated now, had refused to sign documents given by Saifee hospital. We had to explain to them the hospital’s protocol when discharging a patient. The official finally agreed to sign the papers and Eman was discharged,” Sawant said.

According to bariatric surgeon Dr Mufazzal Lakdawala, Eman’s current weight is 170 kg. “She is now fit and is not suffering from any diseases. After carrying out a final health check, the test papers were handed over to the team of doctors of VPS Burjeel Hospital,” Lakdawala said.

Eman’s sister Shaimaa, in an online video last month, had alleged that she was not receiving proper treatment at Saifee hospital. She accused doctors of making “false claims” about Eman’s recovery and weight loss.

“Initially, Shaimaa was happy when her sister’s treatment started. But when we told her that she was fine and could be flown to her home in Alexandria, she started all this drama since she did not want to take her sister back to Egypt because of financial reasons,” Lakdawala added.

However, before leaving Mumbai, Shaimaa said that she was thankful to India and doctors who treated her sister. “I am thankful to India and the doctors in India for helping my sister,” Shaimaa said.

According to Lakdawala, Eman does not need any further surgeries has she has lost a lot of weight, “We have agreed on the point that no weight-loss surgeries are to be performed on her in the near future. Eman is fine and is doing good. She has recovered well and only a CT scan needs to be done to ascertain her neurological condition,” Lakdawala added.
