Tight-rope for MBMC over new connections

- STAFF REPORTER

After a span of more than six years, Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) had lifted the ban on issuing of new waterlines from May 1 but its muchawaited 75MLD water supply scheme being constructed at a cost of Rs 269 crore is yet to start functioning with its full potential.

Ban on the issue of waterlines was lifted following partial release of 25MLD water from the scheme which is in its final stage of completion. The project slated for completion in the second half 2017 will continue releasing water in a controlled manner.

Against a requirement of 175MLD, the twin-city has a total supply of 136MLD. The demand is likely to increase in the coming days given the burgeoning population.

MBMC took up the 75MLD project to regulate demand and supply with the enhanced quota. MBMC officials have worked out an equation towards meeting the high demand. Under the new plan, the corporation is in a position now to assign around 4250 connections, including 2,750 one-inch and 1,500 half-inch connections from the available quota of 25 MLD.

This apart, those seeking additional lines and group connections would also be considered and priority will be given to buildings which are still without connection but have occupancy certificates to get water for residential usage, according to MBMC.
